Mayan Calendars

Picture
One important thing that changed the Mayan's lives was the calendar. The Mayans had a calendar that determined when they should do stuff like when to harvest, marriages, when to go to war, when to do sowing and many other thing.

The Mayan also believed that 2012 was the end of the world.

The Mayan calendar had two different cycles. The festive cycle and the prophetic cycle. The 20 days of the prophetic cycle were named after animals.

Mayan Hieroglyphs

Picture
The Mayan had their own language. They had 800 hieroglyphs! The Mayan hieroglyphs stand for objects, sounds, ideas, and some of them had more than one meaning. The only people that could and were aloud to read and write were the scribes. The scribes wrote stories about wars, births, marriages, and sacrifices. The Mayan also thought that writing was a gift from the gods.

The Divine Monkey

The Mayans thought monkeys were divine creatures. The monkey shows up in a lot of of Mayan myths like when the wood people were punished by the gods by destroying them and the ones that survived were turned into monkeys. The  monkey were also special because they represent the underworld.

Mayan Numbers

Picture
  •  The Mayan had a very different number system than we do. The Mayans base number is 20 instead of 10. They also came up with the idea of the number zero. The number zero is a shell, the number one a dot, and the number five is a line. And to figure out the number all you have to do is add up all the dots and lines. Like the number 23 is, three dots and four lines. And for big numbers they wrote them horizontally instead of vertically.
