Mayan Holidays and Ceremonies

        The Mayans had many celebrations and holidays, some gruesome, Some beautiful. The monarch butterfly was said to bring the spirits of the dead, the Mayans and modern Mexicans called this DAY OF THE DEAD. For Americans, this is about the time of Halloween. To celebrate people dress up as ghosts, mummies, skeletons and more, then they parade trough the town. In the night, they get shovels, blankets, flowers, candles, and picnic baskets. Then they go to the cemetery and put the famous Cempasuchi flower on the tomb.
         Religious ceremonies include dancing, games, prayer, and sacrifice. In sacrifice, the priests take out the heart. The people who takeout the heart are Nacon and the people who hold the victim down are the Chacs.
         Priests and noblemen pierce body parts to “give” blood to the gods. The more power you had, the more blood you had to give.

The Maya dance and music was very interesting. Some scholars believe the Maya really knew a thousand dances! The Maya had drums, turtle shell rattles, pottery flutes, and other instruments.
