There were many challenges in the region where the Mayans lived. For example, there were steep slopes that made it hard to farm. Another problem was that in the winter the land could be dry. Because water flows downward, there was more water between the mountains and hills and that was where the Mayans mainly lived. But the Mayans also thought of solutions. They preserved water using reservoirs, underground pits, and even some drainage structures that could carry water to their crops.

Plants

Plants were very important to the Mayans. They were used for many things, not only food.The ceiba tee was thought to be the tree of life. Trees provided wood for building and bore fruit such as avocados.They could even spice their food using vanilla vines and all spice trees.

Animals

Along with plants there were also lots of animals and the Mayans thought they were very special. Killing the quetza bird could be punishable by death and jaguar fur was prized and stood for power.
